Wanted man tried to evade capture |

A wanted man who tried to evade capture by hiding in people's gardens was arrested - with officers helping him down from the top of a shed after he got himself stuck on its roof. The 31-year-old fled after being involved in a fail to stop in Moorends, and thought he could hide from officers by hopping from garden to garden. What he didn't know was that above him, colleagues from the National Police Air Service (NPAS) were tracking his every move and guiding officers on the ground. After they spotted him climbing onto the roof of a garden shed, he was confronted and surrounded by officers who encouraged him to come down before arresting him. He was arrested on suspicion of numerous offences, including two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a knife or bladed article and recall to prison. A 20-year-old man, who was also involved in the fail to stop and tried to flee from officers, was also arrested on suspicion of taking a vehicle without the owner's consent, dangerous driving, driving without insurance, failing to stop, and drug possession offences. After carrying out further enquiries at the scene, a neighbourhood officer located two stolen vehicles which have since been returned to their rightful owners.
Doncaster East Neighbourhood Policing Team PC Gabi Marriott, who arrested the suspect, said: "This was an excellent bit of teamwork with eyes on the ground and in the sky working in tandem to track a wanted man and ensure he was apprehended. "Despite his best efforts to evade capture, he was never out of sight thanks to the NPAS aircraft and it's a fantastic resource we can call on when needed. "To locate two stolen vehicles and return them to their owners is also incredibly satisfying. We know vehicle crime and the theft of vehicles has a huge impact on people's livelihoods and creates fear and uncertainty in local communities. “We will continue to hunt down those involved in this criminality and I would urge people to make themselves aware of simple steps they can follow to ensure thieves don't prosper and can't access your vehicles.”
